The Paul Preuss refuge is located in the heart of the Catinaccio at the foot of the Vajolet towers at 2,243 m. above sea level. Built in 1913 by the mountain guide Tita Piaz and dedicated by him to Paul Preuss (1886-1913), a famous 20th century climber and the precursor of free climbing, it is still managed by the Piaz family today.
From Pera di Fassa a minibus service connects with the Gardeccia refuge, an hour's walk from the Vajolet refuge. The Gardeccia refuge is 30 minutes ride on the chairlift that runs constantly from Pera to Pian Pecei, with the Vajolet refuge on the same road. Alternatively, it can be reached after taking the Catinaccio cable car which runs from Vigo di Fassa to Ciampedie - the Vajolet refuge is about 90 minutes on foot.
