The Angevin-Aragonese Castle stands in the historical centre of Gaeta (LT). The building was probably built in the 6th century during the war against the Goths or in the 7th century when the seaboard areas of Lazio and Campania were the targets for Lombard expansion.
Documents from Gaeta of that time begin to reference the town as Kastrum. The existence of the Castle of Gaeta is noted in accounts dating to the time of Frederick II of Swabia who stayed several times during the war with the Papal States and appreciated its strategic position, causing the castle to be fortified in 1223.
After further modifications carried out between the 13th and 16th centuries, today there are two castles to consider: the lower Angevin building with a square layout and four circular corner towers (also used as a prison), and the Aragonese castle built by Alfonso I the Magnificent which was fortified on three sides with massive cylindrical towers and a lower defensive addition.
