In the heart of the historical center of Merano, one can find the medieval porticos which the Count of Tyrol ordered to be built during the 13th century.
They are divided into the “River Porticos” (Wasserlauben) on the side the looks out over the Passer, and the “Mountain Porticos” (Berglauben), on the side with a view of Mt. Benedetto. This stretch of porticos, which was once the longest in Tyrol, gradually leads up from Piazza del Grano (Kornplatz) towards the quaint square at the parish church of St. Nikolaus. Enchanting little balconies and countless arches adorn the narrow streets and there are still some osterie boasting old-world South Tyrolean hospitality, mixed in with traditional shops.
