A hamlet of the village of Gais (Bolzano), Lana di Gais (Lanebach) is located at an altitude of 1,500m on the sunny side of the mountain above Villa Ottone. An access road was finally built in the 1980s, which made the life of the local families much easier.
The wooden school was built with the blockbau system (horizontally overlapping logs and beams) in the mid 19th century to spare the children of Lana di Gais the steep and dangerous route to school in Villa Ottone. The school includes a classroom and a small house for the teacher.
It was initially attended by the children from the 9 farms of Lana di Gais and 3 neighbouring farms. Here it was not the children who reached the teacher, but the other way around. Forced to close several times due to lack of students, the mountain school was finally abandoned in 1983 when a transport service was provided to take children to the schools on the valley floor.
The mountain school of Lana di Gais – which is in perfect condition – is the only one of its kind still in existence in the whole of Alto Adige and has been protected as historical-artistic heritage since 2012.
