The approximately 50km long Stelvio road is considered a pioneering work in mountain road construction. It was built between 1820 and 1826 on commission from the Austrian Empire, under the direction of Carlo Donegani, to connect Lombardy, part of the Austrian Empire, with other imperial regions.
During WWI, the Italian front ran along the Stelvio road from 1915 to 1917; remains of the fortifications can still be seen today. Since its construction, the route has undergone few changes. The north-eastern ramp of Prato allo Stelvio (915 m) has 48 hairpin bends.
