The Stelvio Road is considered a pioneering work in the construction of mountain roads. Some 50 km long, it was commissioned by the Austrian Empire and built between 1820 and 1826 under the supervision of Carlo Donegani, in order to provide a direct road link between the Lombardy region and the other regions that belonged to the Empire.
During the Great War, between 1915 and 1917, the Italian front ran along the Stelvio Road, and traces of military fortifications remain visible to this day. Since it was originally built, few changes have been made to the road, which is a total of 49.2 km long. Today the north-western slope of Prato allo Stelvio (915 m) has 48 numbered bends.
