Located on present-day corso Vittorio Emanuele II in the centre of Sassari, Palazzo di Città was once the municipality offices, since 1826 it has housed the Civic Theatre and today is also a museum.
Its present Neoclassical form is the work of architect Giuseppe Cominotti who rebuilt the palace on the site of a previous medieval building. For half a century, the palace has served double functions, both institution and theatre: the municipality offices were transferred to Palazzo Manca di Usini in 1879 and again in the 20th century to their present location in the Ducal Palace. The theatre, whose horseshoe shape emulates the Carignano of Turin, underwent radical restoration work from 1947, reopening twenty years later. Further restoration work followed in the early 21st century. Today it is the setting for concerts, art exhibitions and performances.
The main façade, overlooking the corso, follows purist Neoclassical canons: topped by a triangular tympanum with pilasters of Ionian order. The central axis provides access to the atrium, which features statues of two great playwrights: Vittorio Alfieri and Carlo Goldoni. Over the entrance is the city crest and a plaque with the date of the building.
