The nature reserve of Lago di Penne (province of Pescara) was sponsored in the 1980s by a group of naturalists who began with projects to safeguard the environment surrounding the manmade lake created by the damming of the River Tavo. The lake drains rapidly at the end of every summer, reducing in surface area and depth. It is a fascinating setting, immersed in the sounds and colours of nature. Inside is a Centre for Environmental education, the botanical gardens, the Natural Museum, trails and picnic areas. Places of interest include the Butterfly Garden and the Otter Centre where viewing hides have been built to allow for observation of the rare Mustelidae. There is a wide variety of bird species, including the Black-crowned night heron, symbol of the reserve, the red heron and the fish hawk, alongside numerous others both indigenous and migratory.
