Piazza Gae Aulenti is the new face of Milan, the result of an urban redevelopment project in the Garibaldi, Isola and Varesine neighbourhoods and the meeting point between the historical centre and the financial district.
The piazza has a circular shape, with a diameter of less than 100m, and stands 6m above road level. Paved with slate, it is surrounded by two orders of roofing built in iron, wood and glass on ecologically sustainable principles and covered with photovoltaic panels that provide energy to the three nearby towers. Included in the square are three circular pavement fountains, surrounded by a sculptural bench of 105m in stone and porticoes, beneath which are the shops.
The entire urban complex, comprising the square and the surrounding buildings, which are rented to multinationals, was designed by César Pelli. The Unicredit Tower complex on the square boasts the tallest skyscraper in Italy at 231m, while another impressive construction is the Vertical Forest, an architectural complex of two towers covered with 2,000 types of vegetation. The solar energy lighting system transforms the square every evening into a performance of water, lights and sounds.
Inaugurated on 8 December 2012, it is named for the architect and designer Gae Aulenti.
