The Church of St. Mary Major has ancient foundations with some historical sources recording the first construction being built in the 12-13th century. Located in the historical centre of Casacalenda (CB) it originally had a single nave, but when it was rebuilt following the 1456 earthquake the new church was given three naves. Damaged again in later earthquakes, it has undergone various restoration attempts, during which a fourth nave was added.
It houses two 12th century stone sculptures on the side portal featuring “the Visitation” and “the Crucifix” and several paintings: a 16th century Nativity by Fabrizio Santafede, "The Deposition of Christ" (1658) and a painting by Paolo Gamba of the “Madonna with Child and Saints” (1752). The frontal in white marble of the Christ entombed on the altar of St. Joseph is also worthy of note.
