The village of Casacalenda (CB) covers an area of 67km² and occupies the start of the vast Larinese plain which stretches out to the Adriatic Sea. The municipality comprises both flat valley and hills, where the residential centre is located. There are traces of human settlements in the area dating to prehistory, while Polybius in his Histories (217 B.C.E.) cites the village with the name of Kalena.
Its roots in the feudal system, Casacalenda conserves a medieval urban plan with the historical centre perched on a hill, behind perimeter walls, crossed by a thoroughfare known as Terravecchia. The historical centre comprises the fortified Ducal Palace which has incorporated the gates of the city, the parish Church of St. Mary Major, with its wealth of Renaissance and Baroque artwork, and the Church of the Addolorata. Not far from the city centre is the Convent of Sant’Onofrio, built in 1407, which contains many religious works.
In addition to its historical and cultural heritage, Casacalenda has been home to the Galleria Civica d’Arte Contemporanea and the open-air museum of Kalenarte which display works by artists from all over the globe since the 1990s. Then there is the Museo multimediale del Bufù, dedicated to the traditional musical instrument of the area, and the Nature Oasis managed by the Italian League for the Protection of Birds (LIPU), a hundred acre oak forest near Bosco Casale.
