The city of Campobasso, capital of the region of Molise, is located between the rivers Biferno and Fortore, at an altitude of 701m.
The residential centre has developed around the hill where the Castello Monforte is located. From the highest area, the historical centre of Medieval origin, descends the slopes of the hill in a circular fashion and is characterised by narrow alleyways that wind between clusters of stone houses and small internal courtyards. The most ancient part has important buildings from different historical eras, such as the 13th century Church of San Leonardo, the Castello Monforte, the 15th century Sanctuary of Santa Maria del Monte and the Neoclassical Cathedral della Santissima Trinità.
The modern part of Campobasso which stretches out in the lower area of the plain was created in the 1800s to reflect the era’s ideal of the “garden city”, with open spaces, tree lined squares, wide avenues and fountains. This area holds the Piazza della Prefettura, the adjacent Piazza Pepe and the 16th century Palazzo Mazzarotta which houses the Samnite Museum.
