The Sanctuary of Santa Maria del Monte, whose origins date to the early 1300s, rises close to Castello Monforte in Campobasso.
The small Gothic church whose present structure has a simple stone facade has undergone various restructuring interventions over time. The entrance with three naves leads to a main altar in multi-coloured marble with a statue of the Virgin Mary in an upper niche. The barrel vault is decorated with images of the Fifteen Mysteries of the Rosary, with frescoes decorating the interior, including Amedeo Trivisonno’s Glorificazione della Vergine (1945).
To the right is the room of Padre Pio (Saint Pio of Pietrelcina), which contains objects used by the saint during his time in a nearby monastery between 1905 and 1909.
