The Swabian Castle of Termoli, located on the shoreline of the ancient borgo, is the symbol of the town.
The defensive structure dates to the 13th century when Frederick II of Swabia decided to create a system of fortifications that would stretch to Sicily. Having undergone many structural modifications, the castle today is a tower placed on a square pyramid, whose sides are lined with small cylindrical towers. The windows today are the old arrow slits used for defensive purposes, subsequently modified. While the upper floor could have been adapted to residential purposes, the lower part was mostly used as a warehouse and, in some periods, as a prison.
Today the lower rooms house the Municipal Art Gallery, conferences, exhibitions and events, while the upper part, off limits to the public, is used by the Air Force as a weather station.
