The military shrine of Castel Dante is a funerary monument located on the top of Castel Dante hill near Rovereto. It was built according to the canons of Fascist art between 1933 and 1936 by Ferdinando Biscaccianti on the ridge with the ruins of Castel Lizzana, where soldiers’ corpses previously buried in the numerous military cemeteries in the surrounding areas were brought from 1922 to 1927.
The structure has two storeys. The building is topped with a metal dome inspired by classical art, which can be accessed from the long staircase outside.
It was a symbol of Italian victory in WWI and, later, a monument to all who fell in the Trentino area, on both sides of the conflict. Over 20,000 known and anonymous Italian, Austrian, Czechoslovakian and Hungarian soldiers are buried here.
