Rovereto is the main town in Vallagarina. It comes from the Roman “Roboretum” which indicated the presence of the oaks that fill the valley and means “city of the oak”: the oak (rovere) is symbolized in the city crest. The urban conformation of the town has preserved the medieval layout whose borgo was represented by a handful of houses that rose around a castle protected by a boundary wall.
The Accademia degli Agiati was founded in 1750, the Zandonai theatre in 1782.
The 19th century saw the establishment of prestigious institutions including the Cassa di Risparmio di Rovereto (1841), the building of the acqueduct dello Spino (1843-45), the opening of Manifattura tabacchi (1854) and in 1850, Rovereto established the Italian Tyrol Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
Rovereto features a branch of MART, one of Europe’s most important museums for modern and contemporary art, which hosts temporary exhibitions and permanent collections; the civic museum which produces am international festival of archaeological films; the War Museum, in the castle of Rovereto, which documents WWI; and the bell of Peace which rings out one hundred times every evening in memory of all those who died in war.
