The enchantment of St. Anthony’s Forest near Pescocostanzo (AQ) has always prompted reverent wonder: its sacred aura lead it to being consecrated to Jupiter in antiquity and to St. Anthony in the Middle Ages. Located between the mountains of Pizzalto and Rotella, it unfolds along a charming road that crosses the high plain at 1.3km above sea level, between the villages of Cansano and Pescocostanzo. On its southern border is an ancient complex: the Eremo di Sant'Antonio (Hermitage of St. Anthony) has a little church with gabled bell tower and several small buildings for the hermits. The forest covers about 17 hectares and is full of huge beech trees that are several centuries old and have grown into very original shapes.
