Pescocostanzo (AQ) is a stunning jewel, a town of art and culture in the Appennines. Enclosed in an enchanting natural landscape evocative of fairy tales with its mountains, forests and fields, the harmonious and acclaimed level of architecture and urban layout of the religious buildings, residences and homes of the town is stunning. The interiors of the Church of Santa Maria del Colle (known as the Collegiata) which stands in the centre of town demonstrate the high level of artistic expression with its Baroque coffered ceiling decorated with ornate colours and precious gold leaf. Also worthy of note are: the Church and Convent of Gesù e Maria, the Church del Suffragio, the ancient palaces, monumental fountains, houses with the vignale (outside staircase leading to the front door) characteristic of the area, the streets paved in white stone and the numerous artisan workshops (gold work, wrought iron, inlaid wood and bobbin lace).
To the north of the town, the Hermitage of San Michele Arcangelo can be found on the green plain at the foot of Monte Pizzalto. Hewn out of a small cave and completed with a part built in stone and brickwork, the contrast between the rustic structure of the vault and the fine inlay of the local stone is stunning.
