Venzone (UD) rises on the left bank of the Tagliamento river, the only example of a 14th century fortified town in Friuli Venezia Giulia. Completely destroyed by an earthquake in 1976 and rebuilt as it was in the Middle Ages, Venzone has been declared a national monument.
The oldest part of Venzone is enclosed by medieval stone walls and numerous towers: a wide hexagonal area that rises up on an embankment and corresponds to the ancient residential borgo.
The beautifully recreated historical area features: the Duomo of St. Andrew the Apostle; the ancient Chapel of St. Michael which conserves ancient mummies found in the tombs of the Duomo; and a Gothic Venetian palace that houses the town hall. The village is surrounded by little 15th century churches linked by an ancient Celtic trail.
Venzone is also very popular for its natural landscape, part of the Nature Park of the Julian Prealps. Its woods are home to lynx, bear, mountain goat and ibex.
