The former Church del Carmine in Medicina (BO) was commissioned by the Carmelite monks who lived in the nearby convent. Building commenced in 1696 to a design by Giuseppe Antonio Torri.
The exterior, a Latin cross with a high, octagonal lantern roof, intentionally evokes the heraldic crest of Mount Carmel which is repeated on the tympanum of the façade and in the fretwork of the little bell tower. The Church houses plasterwork, statues and valuable paintings by the 18th century school of Bologna.
Used for worship until the 1920s when it was deconsecrated, the church was used first as a warehouse for the Italian army and later occupied by the Nazis. It was rented out to the Cooperativa falegnami di Medicina after WWII until the early 1950s. Today it is used for exhibitions, concerts and cultural gatherings.
