The Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Riola, hamlet of Vergato (BO), was built between 1975 and 1980 and designed by the Finnish architect Alvar Aalto. The parish complex also includes a wide porch, bell tower, sacristy and canonical house.
The building style is based on the repetition of key elements: asymmetrical slabs in reinforced cement create the bell tower which is topped with a small cross; the main side of the church has four stylized waves with continuous glass windows that provide the interior with natural and uniform light. The inner space consists of a single, asymmetrical nave entirely plastered in white. The flooring is made of small Tuscan terracotta tiles, while the presbytery is paved with mosaic tesserae.
