The Cathedral of San Cassian stands in the centre of piazza Duomo in Imola (BO). Built in Romanesque style between 1187 and 1271, it was consecrated with the deposition of the body of San Cassian in the crypt. The building was restructured numerous times until serious structural problems caused its rebuilding in 1763 by Cosimo Morelli.
The façade dates to 1850, while the Neoclassical interior – on a Latin cross with three naves divided by Corinthian pilasters – is a clear demonstration of the symmetry and grandiosity of Morelli’s designs. A focal point is the presbytery elevated above the Basilica floor, bounded by two side staircases while a third, central, staircase leads to the crypt which holds the marble sepulchre of Saints Cassian, Peter Chrysologus, Proietto and Maurilius. Significant artefacts include the wooden choirstalls dating to the 1700s, the 16th century baptismal font in the first chapel on the left, and a wooden crucifix from 1400s in the second chapel on the right.
