Piazza del Popolo is the heart and soul of the town of Fermo. It is bordered by two long rows of loggias, with brick porticos that are always full of people. On the shorter sides stand important historical buildings: Palazzo dei Priori, created in 1296 by joining a 13th century noble palace and an ancient church, the Apostolic Palace, dating to the early 16th century, and the Loggiato of St. Roch, built in 1528 and home to the Church of St. Martin.
Palazzo dei Priori houses the Civic Art Gallery. A double staircase leads up to the covered entrance where a statue of Pope Sixtus V stands. Articulated over three floors, at the entrance level are the offices of the local police force, the tourist office and the ticket office for the Civic Art Gallery. The first floor has the municipal reception rooms, the Archaeological Museum and the Portrait Hall, which is used for conferences and concerts. On the second floor is the Civic Art Gallery and the Historic Library of the Globe, home to over 300,000 ancient volumes and to the huge globe (almost 2m in circumference) that dates to 1713.
