The medieval town of Nocera Umbra (PG) rises on the slopes of Mount Pennino. The town’s elevated position clearly demonstrates its past as a defensive structure, starting from the mighty castle walls of medieval times.
Its historical center is an evocative place filled with historical and artistic traces. Past Porta Vecchia is the 14th-century Church of St. Francis, home to the Pinacoteca (Art Gallery) and the Civic Museum. The Duomo, a 12th century building completely rebuilt in 1448, has a Romanesque portal on the left side and a majolica floor in the sacristy. Next to it is the Campanaccio (civic tower), an imposing 11th century tower, the only remnant of the ancient fortress. Other attractions include: the municipal theater, an example of Art Nouveau architecture; the neo-Gothic Church of St. Philip, built between 1864 and 1868; the Church of St. Clare (13th century), completely renovated during the 19th century; the Piervissani Library which houses 35,000 ancient volumes and illuminated chorales.
The Way of St. Francis demonstrates the mysticism of these places: every September, during the Satrian Ride, knights in period costume retrace the last journey of St. Francis in 1226 from Nocera Umbra to Assisi.
