An important strategic site, the fortified village of Penna in Teverina (TR) developed around the end of the Roman Empire: the castle was built to control the trade routes of the river Tiber, the via Amerina and the valley below. Penna in Teverina offers a wide range of historical monuments. The medieval town, articulated with towers and gates, still preserves its original structure: the Civic gate, leads to piazza di San Valentino where the parish Church of Santa Maria della Neve is located. A must-see is Palazzo Orsini and its Italian garden, whose façade bears the still visible crests of the two families which previously owned it. The area, positioned like a wide balcony overlooking the Tiber valley, offers the perfect setting for the historic centre of Penna in Teverina during the Festa della Vendemmia (Harvest Festival, first weekend in October), where the key players are grapes, must and wine.
