The old town center of Panicale (PG) has preserved the typically medieval urban structure. Between the two city gates, Porta Fiorentina and Porta Perugina, are three squares each on a different level: the lowest, piazza Umberto I, has a 15th-century fountain, once a cistern for the collection of rainwater; in the middle, the massive Collegiate of St. Michael, an excellent example of Umbrian Baroque, identifies the square with religious power; and in the top square, the Palazzo del Podestà is the heart of the political power. Other monuments of artistic value include: Cesare Caporali Theatre, made entirely of wood and decorated with gold plasterwork and painted festoons, and the complex of San Sebastiano, built in the 17th century by Jesuit Fathers next to the Church of St. Sebastian. Nearby are the pure Renaissance style Sanctuary of the Madonna di Mongiovino and the Sanctuary of the Madonna di Grondici, surrounded by woods of oaks, olive trees, cypresses and pines.
