The roads that lead up the hill of Citerna (PG), a medieval borgo of Umbro-Etruscan origin, offer a panoramic view over the Umbrian and Tuscan High Tiber Valley.
Its ancient heart is the Cassero or Rocca di Citerna, a Longobard fortification. The historical centre features the Church of St. Michael Archangel which houses a Crucifixion on wood by Pomarancio; the 15th century Palazzo Vitelli; and the Church of St. Francis (1316) which preserves a Deposition (16th century) by Pomarancio and a Madonna with Child in coloured terracotta (1415 approx.) recently attributed to a young Donatello and other works. Facing the church, Palazzetto Prosperi has a 16th century Salon del Camino, also known as the Lovers’ Room. Slightly further on, a small archway leads to a picturesque medieval route that winds around the perimeter walls.
Nearby Cerecchio features the former monastery of the Most Sacred Crucifix (16th century) while the churches of Santa Maria and Saint Stephen can be found in Pistrino. The hamlet of Fighille was an important centre for ceramic production in the Middle Ages.
