The historical centre of Giove (TR) is a classic example of medieval layout which preserves part of the city walls and several towers. St. Bernardino’s famous symbol IHS (the first three letters of the name of Jesus in Greek in Gothic letters on a blazing sun) on the gate to the borgo, known as Borgo Vecchio, dates to the early 15th century when he preached in this area.
Construction on the most famous monument, the Ducal Palace, an imposing square building, bounded by two imposing corner towers, began in the 16th century when Duke Ciriaco Mattei commissioned the transformation of a medieval castle into a private residence. The rooms are painted with mythological scenes by artists from the school of Domenichino, Veronese and Orazio Alfani. Fun fact: the building has 365 windows, one for each day of the year. The loggia and unusual spiral ramp, suitable for use by carriages, are notable.
The Parish Church preserves a precious painting of Our Lady of the Assumption, attributed to the school of Niccolò di Liberatore, known as l’Alunno (the Pupil). The Church of St. Roch has frescoes of sacred scenes by the 16th century school of Foligno.
