Located on the south-western edges of Umbria, Attigliano (TR) is a small borgo that rises in an area of Etruscan origin outlined by the natural course of the River Tiber. The Piazza della Rocca features the Fontana dei Delfini (Dolphin Fountain) and a clock tower which marks 12 hours with a single hand, an evolution from the 17th century version which had six hours. A Late Medieval castle built by Count Offredo’s successors was protected by a moat with a drawbridge. The towers were built during the rule of Bartolomeo di Alviano and the pentagonal tower was fitted with a war catapult called the “Bombarda”. The towers and part of the outer walls can still be seen. The modern Church of St. Lawrence the Martyr, consecrated in 1983, is interesting for its stained-glass windows and a bronze portal of considerable artistic value. Nearby, the remains of Etruscan tombs and crypts can be found in the area of Marziano Jana. A natural terrace overlooking the Tiber Valley in the town offers an evocative and enchanting view.
