The Rocche Plateau (province of L’Aquila) is a system of karst plains situated between 1,200 and 1,400 m above sea level, between the Sirente and Velino ranges, the tallest mountains in the central Apennines after Gran Sasso.
The plateau is overlooked by multiple peaks – mounts Rotondo, Cagno, Ocre and Cefalone (all over 2,000m) – and offers an ideal setting for winter sports: cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, downhill skiing, and in other moments of the year, walks, biking and horse riding through the beech forests and pristine natural landscape.
In May, the plateau is covered with white, not for a late snowfall but with the flowering of the wild daffodil. In honour of the flower and to celebrate the arrival of spring, a parade of flower-decked floats takes place in Rocca di Mezzo.
Federico Fellini shot La Strada with Giulietta Masina and Antony Quinn in Ovindoli and Rocca di Mezzo while Rocca di Cambio was the location for Il ritorno di Don Camillo.
