The Castle of Casale Monferrato (AL), also known as the Paleologo Castle, was built in 1357 for Giovanni II Paleologo, Marquis of Monferrato.
The present-day octagonal shape, corner towers and surrounding ditch are the result of defensive construction work to strengthen the building that took place around the 1500s. Although the castle has alternated residential and defensive functions during its history, it has a significant military imprint noticeable in the wall walks and the eastern basements where a range of defensive tools are kept.
Restoration work has made a large part of the interior rooms, towers, courtyard and former-chapel accessible.
The building houses the Emanuele Luzzati Children’s Library (Biblioteca delle ragazze e dei ragazzi "Emanuele Luzzati"), the Regional Enoteca of Monferrato and the Centro Doc, which focuses on research and documentation into the culture and development of wine and the tangible and intangible heritage of the Monferrato area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The inner rooms and some outer areas can host cultural events, exhibitions and displays.
