The Castle of Acaja, built by Philip I d’Acaja between 1324 and 1332, is located in the central square of Fossano (CN), from where it dominates the surroundings. The original brick structure has a regular square layout with quadrangular corner towers rotated 45°.
The Castle was transformed into an elegant noble residence by the Savoy family during the 1500s, with interior decoration by Giovanni Caracca. In the 1600s the building was further expanded for use as a prison with the grand reception rooms transformed into small cells.
Reclaimed in the second half of the 1900s, the Castle was chosen as the location for the Civic Library and State Archive. The 16th century loggias conserve more than 144,000 books and historical archives with approximately 15,000 texts. The inner courtyard and ground floor reception room host cultural activities, conferences, exhibitions and concerts.
