The Sanctuary of the Basilica Our Lady of Montallegro stands in a panoramic position, about 600m above sea level, on the crest of mount Montallegro. The adjacent square offers a panoramic view of the Western coast of the Tigullio gulf, the towns of Rapallo and Santa Margherita, and the promontory of Portofino.
The sanctuary was built in 1559, according to tradition following an apparition of the Virgin Mary. The building, accessed by a wide staircase, has a white marble façade created at the end of the 1800s by the architect Revelli.
The vaults inside are frescoed by the Genovese painter Nicolò Barabino and the decorated altars are polychrome marble.
The sanctuary is linked to the town of Rapallo by road and also by a cable car that reaches Montallegro in 6.5 minutes. It is also possible to follow the ancient donkey tracks that lead to Uscio, Cicagna and Chiavari from the Sanctuary and set off on trekking and mountain-bike paths.
