Resembling a small temple, the Church of St. George perches on the cliff of the Portofino promontory (GE). It is accessed by a pedestrian path, salita San Giorgio.
The building, destroyed and rebuilt many times since 1154, has an oval shape with altars and flooring in marble. It conserves a reliquary of St. George the Martyr, patron saint of Portofino. Legend holds that this was brought back to his hometown by sailors from Portofino returning from the Crusades. One room in the sacristy holds the ex-votos (votive offerings, here in the form of rustic art paintings of various sizes) donated by sailors in the previous century.
