The Baltimora Gardens, also known as the Plastic Gardens, are one of the green areas in the centre of Genoa. Located on the fringe of the historical centre, the gardens were created in the 1970s following the demolition of the pre-existing structures in the Madre di Dio neighbourhood and the building of a business area that now acts as a boundary.
The gardens’ green lawns and play areas are surrounded by buildings in a range of architectural eras and styles: the walls of Barbarossa, medieval in origin; the 16th century Carignano bridge; the neo-classical public washhouses of Barabino; the cement and glass facades of the business area; the skyscraper designed by Marcello Piacentini; the 16th century Basilica of Carignano by Galeazzo Alessi; and the port areas.
