The Rilke path is a charming panoramic route connecting Sistiana and Duino that coasts the Riserva naturale delle Falesie di Duino. This offers a view over the Gulf of Trieste and the Duino Falesie, which are formed, like the rest of the Karst plateau, from carbonate rocks created from the sedimentation of animal shells on the floor of a shallow sea.
The path is named after the poet Rainer Maria Rilke, a guest of the princely Thurn und Taxis family in their Castle in Duino. Rilke loved this place which served as inspiration for his Duino Elegies, writing: "It is splendid to be here". It’s hard to disagree with the pale cliffs rising sheer over the sea, heady scents from the Mediterranean undergrowth, and unforgettable views taking the eye into the blue: this is the Rilke path.
The Rilke path also offers the opportunity to see the Karst phenomenon up close. Viewpoints have been positioned, using bunkers and other military settlements from WWI and WWII.
