For centuries the Raibl – Cave del Predil mine was one of Europe’s most important lead and zinc mines. Closed in 1990, today, as the Raibl International Geomining Park, it is a monument to the memory of the miners and a tourist and educational destination.
The old mine was a 120km network of tunnels on 19 levels, which went down to a depth of 520m. It is possible to visit some of those spaces, traveling part of the tunnels on foot or on board an electric train. The Park offers information about minerals and extraction techniques, and above all provides the opportunity to understand the work of the thousands of miners who worked for centuries in the bowels of the earth.
The Museum of the Mining Tradition of Reibl provides a documentary route with period photos and historical maps, while Raibl-Cave del Predil (a hamlet of Tarvisio, Udine), which owes its Italian name to the presence of the mine, is an example of a “company town”.
