Strada statale 14, known as the coastal road, runs for 11 km from Sistiana to Miramare (Trieste). It is an extremely panoramic road that starts high up on the coast and gradually descends to sea level at the Barcola seafront. There are numerous stopping places that allow drivers to park and admire the view. The summer is a splendid time to walk down the twisting roads that lead to the coast and the many isolated small beaches and stretches including: costa dei Barbari, Canovella de' Zoppoli, i filtri di Aurisina, Grignano. The road, first designed during the Austro-Hungarian empire, was built in the 1920s and became immediately extremely popular with the first driving tourists.
