Surrounded by the mountains of Gennargentu and washed by waterways, making it a setting for rare wildlife and woodlands, Gavoi is a jewel-village in the wild heart of Sardinia’s hinterland and a Touring Club of Italy's Orange Flag Site.
Populated by almost 3,000 inhabitants, at a height of about 800m, it is in the centre of a 3,000-hectares territory covered on two thirds by holm oaks, chestnut, hollies, walnut and cherry trees.
Lake Gusana is located 2km from the village. It is an artificial lake formed in 1959-1961 between Littederone and Nodu nos Arcos mountains, covered with oak and Mediterranean scrub.
In the 'highest' parts of the territory, near the springs, the menhir, the Domus de Janasand the nuraghi, expecially the settlements of Castrulongu and the Talaichè nuraghe, with its tholos roof, (false dome) which is still intact, are a symbol of a territory inhabited since prehistoric times. The Lopène rock (place of punishment) is a suggestive place where, according to a legend, the sacrifice of the elderly was performed.
