In 1934, the fascist leadership decided to create an industrial area in Bolzano. For ten years, new companies would be exempt from taxes and customs duties, attractive government subsidies were granted and the electricity needed to operate the companies was practically free. Thousands of workers came to Bolzano from all over northern Italy. In just a few years, 39 companies with a total of over 8,000 employees had settled there. Today, little remains of those large industries except for the buildings and enormous structures. The former aluminium factory is particularly striking.
