Wedged in the red porphyry rocks of monte di Mezzo, the "cellar in the rock" of Centro sperimentale Laimburg includes a 300 m2 reception room with a high vaulted ceiling, which can host events with up to 100 seated guests, and the storage room for bottles and barrels of the Laimburg wine estate.
The surfaces of the walls and ceilings of this tunnel complex have been deliberately left rough. The entrance to the cellar is through an adjacent building. The route leads past large engraved wine barrels, then to a long tunnel which resembles the access to a mine. The galleries adjacent to the reception room, also dug from the rock, are the storage rooms, filled with long rows of light oak barrels of various sizes featuring central stripes the colour of the wine, bottles and wine. The lighting is provided by light points in the floor and uplighters on the walls.
The "cellar in the rock" also comprises a celebration room (dome) and a small gallery which displays archaeological finds dating back to the Ice Age.
