The Franciscan Church and Franciscan Cloisters stand out for their solemn grandeur and spaciousness.
The church complex with annexed cloisters is located on Franziskanergasse/Via dei Francescani and dates back to the early 14th century. This is one of the few churches from that period to faithfully reflect the lines of Gothic architecture, which stand out for their vertical definition. The view of Klocker‘s noteworthy wooden altar dating back to the 1500s is framed in by the luminous choir, which includes no arcades or high altar.
For centuries the wooden altar was banished to the loft, and was only returned to its place by the monks in the 19th century. The church’s walls are nearly bare; one of the few frescos adorning them was painted in the 1500s and features an absolute rarity in art history – a university enclosed in a church. After being damaged in a fire, the church was rebuilt in Gothic style; the choir and tower date back to the 14th century and the vault to the mid-15th century. The polyptych, also by Hans Klocker (c. 1500) is located in the choir and is bathed in light entering from the more modern glass window.
