In Stampace, the historical centre of Cagliari, MEM — Mediateca del Mediterraneo is housed in the spaces previously occupied by the civic market on via Mameli, bringing together the historical archive, the general library and of Sardinian studies, shopping areas, educational spaces, photographic labs, and screening and conference rooms, in one single modern architectural complex.
It was inaugurated in 2011, in a building of contemporary architecture, 10m high and 105x30m wide. The external façade alternates terracotta and travertine tiles on the first two levels and an iron façade on the recently-added highest level. The interior has transparent walls and sitting areas. The square behind the main entrance features a playful positioning of walls and staircases.
