Cagliari's Municipal Art Gallery stands at the end of the Public Gardens in the Castello district.
Its Neoclassical façade was built in 1828 on a project by Carlo Boyl di Putifigari, while the original block of the building dates from the end of the 18th century. It was originally the seat of the Royal powder magazine. At the end of the 1920s it underwent a radical renovation, which also included the area of the current terrapieno (promenade), by Cagliari-born architect Ubaldo Badas. In 1928 it was turned into the City's Modern Art Gallery.
The Gallery's collections were mostly built up along the 20th century, from gifts, bequests and acquisitions. Today, the Gallery has the greatest collection of works by Sardinian artists, plus a collection on art trends between the 1960s and the 1980s, a collection of ethnographic materials from Sardinia, dated between the late 18th and the mid 20th centuries, and a large collection of prints recently enlarged by the Valle bequest.
In 1999 the Art Gallery was gifted the Ingrao Collection, an important group of works by major 20th-century artists including Balla, Boccioni, Depero, De Pisis, Morandi and Sironi.
