The strada delle Dolomiti was built in the early 1900s to encourage the development of tourism and to show the world the natural beauty of the Dolomites, a focus of international attention since the start of the century.
The Dieta del Tirolo passed provincial legislation for its construction in 1897, planning the road from Trento to Dobbiaco to pass by the Pordoi pass, Arabba, passo Campolongo and Cortina. Work began in May 1901 and the Val di Fassa Livinallongo stretch was inaugurated in autumn 1905.
The commemorative obelisk, built in 1905 which bears the technical data relating to the road, still stands at passo Pordoi, the highest point of the road at 2,239 m. There are 61 turns in the road that stretches out like a long snake between Canazei and Arabba (28 towards Canazei and 33 to Arabba).
