The “Queen of the Dolomites”, Cortina d’Ampezzo (Belluno), is situated at 1,210m in the centre of the Ampezzo valley at the top of the valle del Boite, between Cadore (to the south) and Val Pusteria (to the north), Val d'Ansiei (east) and Alto Agordino (west).
Cortina is a popular destination in both summer and winter, thanks to the winter sports, hiking, climbing and the beauty of the landscape in the Dolomiti d’Ampezzo Nature Park which includes the Tofane group and mount Cristallo over to the Park of Fanes-Sennes-Braies.
The city of Cortina extends around corso Italia, full of shops, restaurants, hotels and more. The main church of Cortina, dedicated to St. Philip and St. James, dating to 1208 and rebuilt in the 1700s has a wooden altar by Andrea Brustolon of Belluno and some paintings by Giuseppe Zanchi, Luigi and Giuseppe Ghedina.
There are many interesting places of culture: the Museum of Modern Art dedicated to Mario Rimoldi in Ciàsa de ra Regoles; the Alexander Girardi Hall Conference Centre, which comprises the Regole d'Ampezzo Ethnographical Museum and the Rinaldo Zardini Paleontological Museum; the open-air Museum of the Great War which stretches from the Lagazuoi and Cinque Torri to Sasso de Stria and the Tre Sassi fortress with military fortifications and buildings of great historical value.
