The new Palavela, or Palazzo a Vela (its name derives from its sail shape) is Gae Aulenti’s reinterpretation of Palazzo delle Mostre, a building inaugurated in 1961 to commemorate the centenary of the Unification of Italy with the purpose of hosting exhibitions and fairs.
Restructured in 2005 for the short-track and figure skating competitions of the Turin Winter Olympics in 2006, it has become a reference point for performances on ice. It registers about 70,000 visitors per year and can accommodate up to 8,500 people.
