The Hapsburg fort in the village of Fortezza (Franzensfeste), about 10 km from Bressanone (Brixen), now houses the local museum. Built in the 19th century, it covers a total of 65,000 sqm with three interconnected blocks: forte Basso, forte Medio, forte Alto.
The building, which also comprises a parade ground, neogothic church, a gold store and an obelisk, was built entirely from local materials. A long underground tunnel links forte Basso with forte Alto, an altitude difference of 100m, with a grandiose staircase of 457 steps.
