A large military fortification was built on the high plateau of Pian dei morti, above Resia – a marsh inscribed as a natural monument – in 1938 to defend the Italian border with Austria.
The route into Italy was protected by a central bunker equipped with cannons and small bunkers with machine gun positions and refuges for the soldiers. The fortification was occupied and fully functional when the German army arrived in September 1943 but numerical disparity required surrender without a fight.
At the heart of the Plamort construction is an anti-tank defence with “Drachenzähnen” (dragons’ teeth), 50-100cm long larch poles reinforced in cement with an anchoring plate and covered with plaster and barbed wire. The anti-tank defence was maintained until 1962.
