The Casa della Commenda has its origins in an ancient Marian hospice that stood in Vipiteno, near the Parish Church of Santa Maria, first mentioned in a document from 1234 and subsequently abandoned.
The three-winged building, grouped around an internal courtyard, extends over an area of approximately 85 x 70m. To the north, an external courtyard, bounded by a wall, features the Church of St. Elizabeth in the north-eastern corner. It is probable that the core of the East wing dates to the mid-13th century, when the hospice was founded, as did the Romanesque construction that preceded the Church of St. Elizabeth restored in Baroque style. A new Foundation administration took office in 1997, developing a wide-ranging renovation project for the entire building and implementing extensive restoration work. The entire building has been used for a range of purposes since the works were completed in 2006.
