Where it was filmed 'Volcano'

Maddalena returns to Vulcano, the island where she was born, after being away for 18 years. Here she is reunited with her little sister, who welcomes her with open arms, in stark contract to the rest of the island’s inhabitants, who snub and marginalise her as a result of her less-than-virtuous past. The island’s volcano meanwhile starts to show signs of reawakening, emitting gas, blasts of vapour, and sulphurous mud. It’s like no time has passed in the town since Maddalena, left, with the same customs, the same stone houses and streets, and even the same cracks in the buildings. The islanders make a living fishing for swordfish and collecting sulphur, and wait for news from the sea.

The sea is crystal clear and bountiful, as we can see from the many dives of the diver as he searches for sponges. As well as Vulcano, some of the scenes of the film were shot on the island of Salina.

The tuna fishing sequence was shot where the tuna-fishing nets are set up in Milazzo (ME).
